 Dr Johan Luthman,
Vice President Neuroscience & Ophthalmology Research & Development, Franchise Integrator Merck Ltd Johan Luthman is vice president and franchise integrator, Neuroscience & Ophthalmology Research & Development, at Merck Research Laboratories (MRL). In this role, he is responsible for overseeing late research and early development activities within the franchise, with an emphasis on the pathway to proof of concept trials and supported biomarkers. Dr. Luthman joined Merck in 2009.
Prior to his time at Merck, Dr. Luthman served as Therapy Area head of Neurology, Immunology & Inflammation Research, and later head of PoC strategy in Neurology at MerckSerono, a subsidiary of Merck KgaA. He joined Serono Pharmaceuticals International SA in 2005 as head of neuroscience and immunology research. Dr. Luthman began his pharmaceutical career in 1991 as a research scientist at Astra Arcus AB. After the formation of AstraZeneca, he worked as director of Bioscience, followed by an appointment as director of translational science in Neurology and Analgesia
Dr. Luthman studied medicine and dentistry at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and continued with postgraduate studies in neuroscience, which led to a doctorate in neurobiology. He received an honorary professorship in pharmacology in 2002 from the University of Chile in Santiago.
