Rolf Burghaus, Head Modeling & Simulation, Bayer Pharma

Rolf Burghaus started his scientific education at the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf in 1990 taking courses in mathematics and physics. He soon specialized in theoretical physics where he got his diploma in late 1995. He continued in the field and got his doctor degree in 1997 with a work on the diffusional growth of droplets in different wetting regimes. In 1998 Rolf Burghaus went to the Physics Department of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) as a visiting researcher, where he worked on problems in non equilibrium thermodynamics. Rolf Burghaus joint the central technology division of the Bayer AG – which soon became Bayer Technology Services GmbH - in 2000 primarily working on process analysis and optimization using Data Mining and Artificial Neural Network technologies. In 2005 his focus shifted towards systems biology and he became the project leader for the development and application of an elaborate mechanistic blood coagulation simulator, which is used for in silico investigations of various drugs and drug classes e.g. delivering benchmarks with respect to safety and efficacy properties and dosing recommendations. Rolf Burghaus switched to Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals in 2008, where he became the head of the modeling and simulation department of Clinical Pharmacology.
